Maitri Presents "An Evening with Alarmel Valli"
Domestic Violence Organization Fundraiser Made Possible with Support of Cellmania.com
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 24, 2000 -- Maitri (www.maitri.org), a non-profit organization in the Bay area that helps South Asian women facing domestic violence, emotional abuse or family conflict, will host a fundraiser titled "An Evening With Alarmel Valli," Friday, May 5 at the Santa Clara Convention Center Theater starting at 8 p.m.
The event features the award-winning South Indian classical dancer, Alarmel Valli, who was awarded the honor of State Artist of Tamilnadu between 1981 and 1984 and was the youngest dancer to receive India's President's Award of "Padmasri" in January 1991. Valli has also danced at Moscow's famous Bolshoi Theatre, the Vienna International Dance Festival and the Solo Donna Festival for Venice Biennale.
Maitri's main goal is to empower women to make independent decisions and to provide preventative services to avoid or eliminate the types of crises many South Asian women encounter. Maitri, which means friend in Hindi, also provides peer support and referrals for legal help, emergency shelters and counselors.
Cellmania.com, an online cellular phone retailer and provider of m-commerce (mobile commerce) solutions to retailers, portals and enterprises, serves as the event's title sponsor, and is covering all costs associated with renting the theatre, paying performers and publicizing the event. Cellmania.com's support allows all proceeds raised from the event to be donated to Maitri.
"Maitri provides an important service to the Bay area's South Asian community," said Ronjon Nag, CEO and co-founder of Cellmania.com. "We are delighted to support such a good cause. This is an extension of our E-mergency Phone Donation Campaign, where we encourage our customers to donate their old phones for use as emergency phones. Cellmania.com and Maitri share the same goal of helping women to help themselves."
Tickets are available for $20, $50 and $100 and can be obtained by contacting Maitri at (408) 730-4049 or via e-mail at tickets@maitri.org. Interested individuals are also welcome to mail their ticket requests, including desired number of tickets, ticket price and ticket mailing address, to PO Box 60111, Sunnyvale, CA 94086.
